2023 Scholarship Recipients

Juanita Forehand
In high school, I volunteered in food and clothing drives. I was in the National Honor Society and advocated for mental health, self-care, and for abuse victims. I was also a youth director, choir president, Sunday school secretary, and church announcer in the Salem Missionary Baptist Church. This scholarship will afford me the opportunity to become the teacher that I desire to be, to make a difference in the lives of young people like so many have done for me. It will help me be able to pursue that post-secondary education that I so very need to spread this love and encouragement that was gifted to me, to others. It takes a village to raise a child.

Khanye Robinson
In high school I was on the marching band, in the Beta Club, Student Government Association, and I volunteered with the Special Olympics for four consecutive years. Overall, the main goal of becoming a Social Studies teacher for me is so I can encourage civic activity among students here in the Big Bend area. With my own eyes, I have seen my peers dismiss the importance of being active in even local politics and civic duties. As a Social Studies teacher, I would hope to ignite a passion for civic duties in my students, not just so they can pass an EOC, though. I want this passion to stay with them for their entire lives. I believe that I can help instill these values in the future generation due to my undying love of helping others learn and understand. One day, I will use my position as a teacher to make a real change in our community.

Chloe’ Lee
I was an active member of the Student Government Association, National Honor Society, National Beta Club, Phi Theta Kappa, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. I also volunteered with Zeta Phi Beta’s and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s supply drives and the Special Olympics. My goal is to create educational materials that will inform people about the latest cyber threats and the best ways to defend themselves. I aim to develop policies and procedures to minimize the risks of cyber-attacks on organizations. My passion for technology and my intense desire to shield individuals, organizations, and governments from cyber threats will be the foundation of my anticipated contribution to the cybersecurity field.

Micah Ward
During my time in high-school, I participated in the National Honor Society, FSU Upward Bound Program, and was a varsity cheerleader. I am self-motivated, persistent, dependable, and a diverse young lady. I enjoy meeting new people from all sorts of backgrounds. My ultimate purpose is to come back to the community to assist and enhance children of all ages and promote health. With my interest in Pediatrics, my goals are to be in various organizations that will provide me with life-coaching through mentorship and assist in building an academic foundation that will enhance my college experience and achieve my dream of being a pediatrician.

Brian Ward
I participated in the Gadsden County High School football team and the Culinary program. I also volunteered for my community as an Executive Intern for the Gadsden County High School. I take inspiration from the great doctors and physicians from Gadsden. Many have served and continue to serve the people of Gadsden County. It is my hope to continue this legacy of Gadsden County healthcare providers through obtaining a degree in nursing and becoming a registered nurse. I will continue to be ambitious in my pursuit and I will not let anything stop me from making a difference within my community.

Ja’Myla Stanley
I played basketball, volleyball, and participated in the yearbook staff of my high school while also engaging with the FSU Upward Bound Program. Physical therapy has always been my passion and with passion comes a career. For reasons like being involved in sports and loving the environment, also being able to impact others life positively, lastly the stability in life this career can provide as well. This has become my goal and career choice and with determination and drive I’ll reach that.

Aaliyah McKinnon
I actively engaged with my school’s Student Government Association, African American Culture Club, and the FSU Upward Bound Program. This scholarship assists me financially and helps me achieve my dreams of being a successful ultrasound technician. Being an ultrasound technician offers numerous benefits. While the job can be physically and emotionally demanding, the rewards of helping patients and contributing to the medical field make it a fulfilling, worthwhile career.

Christian Alexander
I played for my school’s varsity football team while also working with the Student Government Association, the African American Culture Club, and the FSU Upward Bound Program. I want to use my knowledge and my passion to hopefully right some of the wrongs that have been done in this country. I want to channel my time and talents to be a part of the solution of making our communities better and stronger with the presence of more black males in their homes and with their children. Once we begin to do this, everything around us will begin to change for the better.
